Metamorphosis of Mobility

NYIT Architecture Student Project

This project explores the transformation of everyday mobility devices through a process of deconstruction and reassembly. After experiencing a year of wheelchair use following an accident, the student reconfigured its components into a new structural form, examining how mobility aids influence one’s physical and emotional relationship to movement.

By rearranging the parts of the wheelchair, the work highlights the adaptive nature of design and the personal narratives embedded in objects we rely on. The piece reflects on how tools of assistance can evolve in meaning when shifted into a new architectural context.

The work isn’t complete just because it’s well made. How it is presented and communicated ultimately defines its level of refinement. Camera angles, lighting, the way materiality is revealed, and how the images are eventually edited and sequenced within a portfolio—all of these elements determine the final quality of the work. The shoot I conducted with the student was part of that process. Even within just two images, we focused on creating a composition and edit that clearly conveys the character of the piece, and the student is steadily developing a stronger sense of how to articulate their work visually. Creating a piece doesn’t end at the hands. Representation is part of the process, and understanding that whole arc is what ultimately shapes a designer’s attitude.

Entangled Perspective is a work inspired by the motif of a window—an element that blurs the boundary between inside and outside. A window is never just an opening; it is a threshold where two worlds coexist, overlap, and interfere with one another. I was drawn to this ambiguity—the simultaneous presence of transparency and reflection, revelation and concealment—and sought to visualize a structure in which perspectives intertwine.

I found joy in discovering universal principles through the process of design. Asking myself questions and seeking answers through geometric ideas has always been an enjoyable experience for me. (...) When assembling my portfolio, I wanted to weave these questions and explorations into a coherent narrative. From architectural-scale spatial compositions to the mechanical logic of hand-crafted objects, I expanded the spectrum as if gradually zooming in through a lens.

To me, a portfolio is a storybook about oneself. The process of constructing this story allowed me to reorganize my past thoughts and to once again recognize the unique perspective through which I see the world.

저는 디자인을 할 때 보편적인 원리를 발견하는 과정에 흥미를 느꼈습니다. 스스로 질문을 던지고, 기하학적인 아이디어를 통해 답을 찾아가는 과정은 저에게 즐거움이었습니다. Based on several projects I had developed with great interest during my undergraduate years, I added a few new works while preparing for graduate studies abroad. Through this process, I was able to reflect deeply on the architectural ideas that truly engage me, and ultimately organized my portfolio around four key concepts: Topology, Biophilia, Void, and Simulation.

During the preparation period, I had the opportunity to refine my portfolio at my own pace. It was a period of solitude and focus, allowing me to freely explore ideas I couldn’t fully attempt in school—expressing them through models, diagrams, and visual studies. This time also allowed me to delve more deeply into the architectural concepts I was most drawn to, making it an invaluable and meaningful stage of growth.

What’s crucial in these moments is the ability to ask yourself questions and critique your own work—even without external feedback. It’s also important to raise your own standards by looking at a wide range of works. Rather than simply mimicking a design, try to understand why others made certain decisions, and reflect on how those ideas could inform your own work. That kind of reflection can be incredibly valuable.

Of course, this process can be painful at times, but I believe the act of questioning yourself brings just as much growth as studying abroad itself.

Book excerpt (released date: 7/26) :Looking back, the time I spent preparing for graduate school was when I felt at my smallest. It was a period full of uncertainty, where it was
easy to feel discouraged. I hope this collection can offer even a small sense of comfort or encouragement to someone — a reminder that
there is no single way to make a portfolio. It is with that hope, albeit a little self-consciously, that I took part in this project. I sincerely wish this book can be of help to many of you who read it.

돌이켜 보면 유학을 준비하던 시기가 제게는 가장 자신이 작게 느껴졌던 때였습니다. 모든 게 불확실하고 위축되기 쉬운 시간 속에서, 이렇게 다양한 포트폴리오도 가능하다는 점이 누군가에게는 작은 위안이자 용기가 될 수 있기를 바랍니다. 이 책이 그 시작점이 되었으면 하는 마음으로 부끄럽지만 이 프로젝트에 함께하게 되었습니다. 이 글을 읽는 많은 후배님들께 조금이나마

While there is no singular ‘correct’ answer for a portfolio, I believe it must contain a clear personal narrative, and that the Statement of Purpose (SOP) should support this story. My competition entries, professional work, and other projects differ in nature and attitude from my academic work, making it difficult to present them within a single, unified narrative. However, I see these varied experiences as records that together portray a multi-dimensional view of who I am today.

포트폴리오에 정답은 없지만 본인의 이야기는 분명히 있어야 한다고 믿었고, SOP는 그 이야기를 뒷받침하는 글이어야 한다고 생각했다. 공모전이나 실무 프로젝트 및 기타 작업들은 학부 프로젝트와 성격이나 태도 면에서 달랐기에 일관된 흐름으로 설명하긴 어렵다. 하지만 서로 다른 역할과 환경 속에서 쌓아온 경험들은 지금의 나를 입체적으로 보여주는 기록이 되었다고 생각한다.

If I could go back and prepare again, I would try to show my work to more people and seek more feedback than I did back then. Through the process, I realized that designing a portfolio page begins with finding the most suitable references for my project and setting them as clear goals. I now regret how ashamed and hesitant I used to feel about showing my portfolio to others.

At one point, I mustered up the courage to ask a senior colleague for advice. I learned how reassuring and empowering it can be to speak with someone who has faced similar struggles. Most importantly, it gave me a fresh, more objective perspective on my own work.

예전으로 돌아가 다시 준비를 한다면, 그때보다 더 많은 사람들에게 보여주고 더 많은 피드백을 받으려 노력했을 것 같다. 결국 페이지를 디자인한다는 것은 내 프로젝트에 가장 알맞은 레퍼런스를 찾아 목표로 삼는 것에서 시작된다는 사실을 작업하며 배울 수 있었다. 당시에는 내 포트폴리오를 누군가에게 보여준다는 것이 왜 그렇게 창피하고 조심스러웠는지, 지금은 많이 후회된다.

One thing I can say for certain is that my style today is clearly different from the one I had 5 years ago when I was preparing to study abroad. Even so, there's a vague, but consistent thought I've held both then and now. [...]

If I went back 5 years ago and looked at my old portfolio, I'm sure I could give a three-hour critique without even stopping for a sip of water. That means I 've become someone who can accept that change. In the end, what's truly important isn't getting feedback from others, but continuously questioning and explaining your work to yourself.

Ultimately, what I want to say is this : If I can clearly articulate, here and now, what kind of thinking has guided my work over the pas few years, maybe that in itself is what makes a good portfolio.

Many people often reduce “references” to mere acts of copying, but for me they have always been essential tools for learning and self-reflection. They allowed me to understand where I stood and where I needed to go.

From there, I began to draw input not only from architecture, but from visual arts, sculpture, street art, film, exhibition design, and even philosophy. Interpreting and recombining these influences in my own way became a core part of my growth as a designer.

Working in isolation inevitably imposes limits. Cut off from the outside world, it becomes challenging to develop new ideas purely from within. I believe that to become a better designer, one must continually seek out better work, study it deeply, and truly make it one’s own. The most practical and effective way to break through creative barriers is to reference, analyze, and reinvent.

This book shares my early design process from six years ago. It reflects the questions, failures, and experiments that shaped my emerging design language. My hope is that it serves not simply as a guide to “making a good portfolio,” but as a resource for anyone committed to ongoing growth and development.

We’re excited to announce that this special publication will be released on July 26. It features the portfolios of 15 designers who prepared for architecture graduate school in the U.S.—a carefully curated glimpse into their creative journeys, challenges, and solutions.

When preparing for study abroad, many of us learn and grow through an endless cycle of referencing, observing, and reinventing. We study countless precedents, analyze what resonates with us, and transform these insights into something uniquely our own.

Design is, in many ways, an act of looking carefully at what has come before—absorbing influences, filtering them through our own experiences, and producing something new.
